Spin: Hi Spin! So sorry to hear about your unpleasant visit, especially when you had overseas guests that included seniors and kids. I have noticed that their service tends to be brusque, particularly on busy nights. I was surprised too when I first heard of the minimum 1 order per person, which I can understand if they are having a busy night. But when things are slow in the shop, I agree with you that perhaps they should reconsider their policy.

It was quite bad service there. Recently went there as a group of 10. Took some guest I had from overseas there to have some ice cream. Out of the 10, there were 2 senior citizens over 70, 3 kids under 5.

We ordered the Super (to serve 4-5 people). After ordering and sitting down, we got told that we have not ordered enough and the policy of minimum 1 order per person applies. I'm sure they could use their brains and work out that neither the kids nor the elderly would be eating that much ice cream. It wasn't even a busy time - about 6 other people in the shop at that time with plenty of spare seats all over.

I've been to the French Riviera many times before. Their ice cream is great and service was decent. However, this experience has made sure that it will take alot of convincing for me to ever step back into that shop.

For the price difference of $7 (Super to Maxi which they wanted us to upgrade to for us to eat there), they have lost a customer for a life time.

Yes rules are rules but to force us to order more than what we can eat just for us to eat there? Common sense should have prevailed.

ty: Yeah, it gets really mucky towards the end :P Other than that, the rest were pretty good!

bubble&squeak: Oh no! Yes, the place can get pretty mad in the late hours. That's why I'm always clutching my handbag, because it's so easy for someone to 'bump' into you and snitch something away. I agree the staff can be rather aloof... must be a French thing! Oops. I am a lot more paranoid in Sydney than Singapore. You had better be careful too in Malaysia! I've heard some scary things in KL... take care!

Jenn's an Ice Cream Maker: Haha I have! And it's the Maxi from the same cafe! I'll have to grab a few more people crazy enough to eat that with me...

zee: Yeah!!! Com'on, we know it wasn't THAT big. Haha!

Hmmm...I was going to recommend this to you but I had a bad experience sitting al fresco at this dessert bar one evening. It was a first visit and I have never been back since. It was a full-house that night but I still had my bag snatched and the staff were not in the least bit helpful. Perhaps it happens all the time and the information just bored them.
It was a pain to get all my cards and phone contacts back.
The perpetrators also tried calling the bank to allow access to my already-blocked cards and library cards, etc were found all across Sydney in the ensuing weeks.
What a headache!
Anyway, I guess things like this can happen anywhere but be extra careful when dining out and especially in arcades that house places like Riviera. Being in a busy, populated place doesn't necessarily mean that you're safe from crime.
Sydney is probably not as safe as Singapore and crimes are not always appropriately punished in Australia. Muggings are not uncommon on the public trains.
Well, I guess it can't be as bad as Malaysia where things like this have happened to almost every single person I've come across.
